It has been announced that the Mount Greylock Winter Musical this year will be Hello, Dolly! This classic musical, revived four times on Broadway, is written by songwriter Jerry Herman (La Cage Aux Folles, Mame), and book writer Michael Stewart (Bye Bye Birdie, 42nd Street), and is based on Thornton Wilder’s play The Matchmaker.
It tells the story of matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi, an aging widow who lovingly meddles in people’s lives. Dolly travels to New York City to try to find a match for the arrogant, miserly half-a-millionaire Horace Vandergelder, though it’s clear she has her eye on him herself. Along the way, she meddles in the lives of Horace’s clerks Cornelius and Barnaby, dressmakers Irene and Minnie, Horace’s niece Ermengarde, and painter Ambrose, in what can only be referred to as the pinnacle of good old-fashioned musical comedy.
The iconic role of Dolly Levi has been filled by such legends as Carol Channing (who immortalized the role and played it on Broadway on three separate occasions), Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Donna Murphy, and Bernadette Peters; the star-studded list goes on.
Auditions for the musical will be held on the 10th and 11th of December, and an instructional meeting will be held this Friday, November 30th, in the foyer. The musical will be directed by Jeffrey Welch, with vocal coach Jean Kirsch. The pit orchestra will be directed by Lyndon Moors.
