Mount Greylock’s cross country teams have both finished their regular seasons with a 14-0 record. The next step is at the Western Mass Championship on Sunday, October 26, where they hope to secure the win as well.
The boys team also won the Berkshire County Invitational on Sunday, October 19. The season has been going well for the boys despite being “a young team with no seniors. [The] junior captains have set good examples for the younger runners and helped them to feel part of the team,” said head coach Chris Malone..
After the Western Mass Championship, they will continue on to the Divisional Championships on Sunday, November 9. Then, if they qualify at divisionals, they will head to the State Championship on Sunday, November 16. “These meets will be much more competitive than our Berkshire County races. We hope to have everyone healthy…for these meets,” said Malone..
During the season “almost all of [the] runners have improved. I think everyone has had fun which is very important to Coach Case and me,” Malone added.
The girls cross country season has also been going well with “very few illnesses or injuries. [There are] 24 girls on the team who work hard, train well, and are supportive of each other,” said coach Jenna Dickinson. “We have lots of fun while working hard at practices. This fall, we have had amazing weather which has been helpful for a consistent training program,” added Dickinson.
The girls will head to Stanley Park in Westfield on Sunday, October 26 for the Western Mass Championship meet. That will conclude the season for most of the team, after which just ten athletes will continue to train for the Divisionals Championship and the Massachusetts State Championship. Divisionals are on Saturday, November 8th and the State Championship is on Saturday, November 15th. Both are in Devens, MA.
Both the Mount Greylock girls and boys cross country teams have had successful seasons, and hope to continue this momentum into the postseason meets.
