Track Teams Win Western Mass Championship

The Mount Greylock Track teams continued a successful season with wins for both the boys’ and girls’ teams at the Division ll Western Massachusetts Championships on Friday. The season started on April 24, with a meet at Mount Anthony. Both the boys’ and the girls’ teams dominated, each defeating Mount Anthony and Taconic. The next meet for the Mounties was at the Williams track. They continued to dominate, with the girls defeating Monument Mountain 99-42 and Wahconah 80-61. The boys outscored Monument Mountain 116.5-24.5 and Wahconah 83-58. The next meet was also home, held on May 5. The Mounties continued their rampage, both picking up wins against Lenox and Drury. The boys crushed Lenox by a score of 105-36, and Drury 138-3. The girls fared equally well, taking down Lenox 106-35 and Drury 125-16.

The final league meet was held on May 8 at Hoosac, in which both Mountie teams faced their toughest meets of the season. The girls defeated Hoosac, and managed to overcome Pittsfield 76-65. The boys team, despite defeating Hoosac, fell just short of taking out Pittsfield, losing 70-71.

This loss did not stop them. Both teams competed in the Western Mass Division ll championships on Friday night. The boys won, beating second place Frontier 97-62, helped by a number of first place finishes. The Mounties 4×800 team claimed first in a time of 8:52. Owen Brandriss took first in the 800, and Josh Cheung in the mile. The girls defeated runner-up South Hadley 95-81. Their 4×800 team took first, and the team saw first place finishes by Jackie Wells in the mile and Lilly Wells in the 800. Both teams will compete next Saturday for the Division ll West-Central championship in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
