Boys Soccer Recap
The boys soccer team’s season came to an end on Friday, November 6th in a close match against Palmer. The winner of the match would go onto Western Mass semifinals. Since the score remained 0-0 after eighty minutes of regular play and thirty additional minutes of overtime, the match boiled down to penalty kicks. Palmer won the match four to three. Senior goalkeeper Cal Filson stopped the onslaught of five shots from Palmer sophomore Jake Riel during the game. Juniors Crow Brennan and Naka O’Connor and Sophomore Sam Dils scored the three penalty kicks for the Mounties.
The team ended the season with a 11-5-1 record, a setback from last year when the team reached Western Mass Finals. But, coach Blair Dils still thought they had “a highly successful season” given the circumstances. The team lost eight starters from last year, so many of this year’s players were on the varsity team for the first time, “We lost our whole starting lineup” Cal Filson said. Along with the major roster changes, Kyle Bazonski, a key junior defender, was out with a shoulder injury for the quarter-final match, and the defense had to reshape to accommodate for his absence quickly. Although they fell short in the Western Mass. tournament, Coach Dils noted that the team did, “pull off some really high level wins against Division I opponents and placed first in their league for the seventh time.” Filson felt the season was a success, “We definitely exceeded people’s expectations. The way other guys conducted themselves on the field was really awesome.”
