The Mt. Greylock Boys’  Ski team finished the season on a high note. After largely dominating the Berkshire County Division, the five-time defending State Champion Mounties again took home the top honor of the season.

Of the four races held this season, the Mounties won three. They were only beaten once by a central Massachusetts school, Northfield Mount Hermon. As a privately funded school, Northfield can enter the League races, but not the state race, as it is for public schools only. Another challenger for the title to the Mounties this year was Amherst High School. “We were a little concerned that Amherst might be a worthy contender at the State Championship race,” said boys’ coach Hiram Greene. Amherst came in second in overall points at the end, and placed one competitor in the top ten.

Mt. Greylock was the only school with two racers in the top ten finishers at the State race. Senior Captains Ian Culnane and Matt Wiseman finished third and fourth, respectively.  Said Greene, “It certainly was a fitting end for these two six year veterans, overcoming a difficult, snowless season.”

Last season, Greylock graduated five top skiers. Consequently, younger skiers on the team contributed to the winning result at the end of this year’s season. Junior Evan Arthur finished fourteenth at the State race, followed by sophomore Ric Donati in twentieth place. Culnane is hopeful for the future for the team, and as for the finish, “I’m ecstatic about how the season went. When you go out winning, it’s just an unbelievable feeling, because it doesn’t feel like there was a definitive end. There was no better way to have finished the season.”
