The wrestling season officially ended on February 2 with the Mounties’ last match against Hoosick Falls High School, ending the season with an overall team record of 27-9. In Berkshire County’s conference, the Mounties went 3-3, notching victories against Monument Mountain High School and Mt. Everett High School. After the regular season, the team set out for individual victories, sending the varsity squad to wrestle in the Western Massachusetts State Qualifier. All three Greylock captains, junior Devin Pelletier and seniors Cayman Mead and Hunter Abriel, placed second in their respective weight classes, earning a spot in the Division III State Championship.

However, while Mead and Pelletier advanced to Taconic High School for the competition, Hunter Abriel suffered a knee injury which ended his season early. At the tournament, Mead and Pelletier placed 7th and 4th respectively. Pelletier’s performance and consequent place continued his season to the All State Championship in Reading, Massachusetts. There, the Greylock junior placed 6th, moving him on yet again to the prestigious New England Wrestling Tournament. Pelletier quickly gained attention after winning his second match in sudden death overtime, edging out the 2nd-seeded wrestler 10-8. After his next slated opponent suffered an injury in a previous round, Pelletier finished 5th overall.

This year also marks Head Coach Raymond Miro’s last year as both a teacher and coach at Mt. Greylock. The National Wrestling Hall of Famer is stepping away from the sport after leading Greylock’s program for 25 years. “Miro’s absence will be kind of  like a house without heating,” joked Pelletier. “It’s going to be weird without it, but we will adapt and adjust.”

“By the end of the season, the team felt like family,” Pelletier said. “It feels odd now that this season’s over, but I’m excited to start the next one.”
