Football Beats Drury

Having lost a tough first game in Week 1 to Hoosac Valley, Mt. Greylock was looking to show the Drury Blue Devils how they could really play on Friday, September 15.

The Mounties came roaring onto John Allen Field, with junior Michael Wellspeak throwing a touchdown pass three minutes into the game, connecting with senior Sean McCormack. The Mounties never looked back from that point, scoring three more touchdowns in the 1st quarter. Juniors Taylor Cummings, Tyler Carnevale, and Cal Messina each rushed for a score.. Up 30-0 in the 2nd quarter, the Mounties showed their defensive abilities, including a pick 6 by McCormack, and a fumble converted into a touchdown by senior Reece Gillette. Drury came close to scoring at the end of the 1st half, but freshman Malcolm Waynick kept them scoreless by intercepting a pass with 40 seconds remaining.

In the second half, up 46-0, Greylock used their strong young core, including 12 freshmen, against the Blue Devils older, more experienced offense. This young squad performed admirably given the circumstances, allowing only two touchdowns throughout the whole second half, for a final score of 46-14. Said Head Coach Andrew Agostini about the future of his Mt. Greylock football program, “it’s great to see that we have a nice foundation, and that the program’s getting built up; these younger kids are obviously a very important part of that.” Reflecting on the squad as a whole, Coach Agostini added, “I felt like this was a full team game; we had some good plays on special teams, good plays on defense, good plays on offense. We don’t want to be one-sided, or even two-sided, you have to be three-sided, and that’s what we were tonight. We’ll just try to keep this going in our games ahead.”

Mt. Greylock’s (1-1) convincing win will propel them into their next game vs Belchertown this coming Friday, the last game of their opening three game homestand. Drury (0-2),  will face Lee on Saturday, September 23 in its home opener.
