Young Runners Step Up
Every course the girls’ cross country team races on has its own quirks. Greylock has the steep climb up Hiram Greene Hill, Mount Everett lacks solid directions, and Hoosac has its mud. At Hoosac, numerous wipeouts have occurred over the years and several shoes have slipped off of runners’ feet. Just last week, the team trudged through the mud at Hoosac and at least two shoes were claimed. The team returned to Hoosac on Wednesday and was prepared for anything.
The team did not run five of its top six runners in order to rest before the big upcoming race at Burnt Hills. Hearing this, skeptics would think the team would not have a chance at placing as well as it normally does in races; however, the girls racing proved these doubters wrong. Greylock pulled off a tremendous win over Pittsfield and Mount Everett with outstanding races from Margo Smith, Sophie Gerry, Bella Bote, Ariel Dupras, Emily Lescarbeau, and Catherine Cavalli. This bodes well for the team’s future with such young runners performing so strongly. “It was so exciting. They all stepped up and had huge races!” said Laura Galib.
