After a hard-fought win against an evenly-matched Drury Blue Devils team on October 3, the Mounties turned their attention to the 4-2 South Hadley Tigers. About a week ago, the Mounties seemed like a defeated and hopeless team after losing two games  in which they went scoreless; this is largely due to being riddled with injuries. On the Mounties senior night, the Tigers proved to be too much, winning 42-12. Despite the blowout loss, Greylock solidified itself as a run-first team.

The power run game has been the most successful tool so far for the Mounties as the passing game has died down significantly after senior wide receiver Michael McCormack went down with an injury. In order to continue the trend, the Mounties offensive line must play at their best. That task lies on the shoulders of senior tackles Matt Hogan and Jake Benzinger. The Mounties also possess a special offensive weapon in the calcified, hardened right foot of senior kicker, Jesse Dilego. While Dilego has not been given any opportunities to attempt a field goal in a game yet, he also serves as a receiver, consistently catching passes from junior quarterback Brodie Altiere as a wide out for Coach Shawn Flaherty’s offense. After a rough season so far, it might seem difficult for the team to find motivation to strap on their pads. In Hogan’s mind, the plan has always been simple, “We try to succeed and get better everyday. We’re always trying to win games and improve at practice. That’s all the motivation we need.” Despite the ups and downs this season has had, Greylock is motivated to fight on.

Then, on October 17, Greylock lost another tough one at the hands of Lee, officially dropping them to 2-5 and out of playoff contention.

The Mounties will continue to strive for improvement practice-by-practice and game-by-game. For now, Greylock will relish all of the waning moments of the season. When asked about a defining moment of the season, Benzinger noted, “Going back to week one when Brodie threw the fourth and long touchdown to Michael. It won us the game and the play was an excellent team effort.” Moments like these certainly hold a special spot in Greylock football players’ minds.
