Register Educate Vote, or REV, is making a comeback after being absorbed into the student council last year. The hybrid subcommittee/club recently had its first current events table and completed volunteering and voter registration projects for the election.
REV is a student council subcommittee co-chaired by senior Charlotte Holubar and sophomore Sabine Guerra and advised by Mary MacDonald. The group’s goal is to promote civic engagement and help with voting efforts in the local community.
REV started out the year with the goals to “one, conduct a mock election, two, run current events tables, and three, work with the League of Women’s Voters,” said Holubar. A few months later, they have completed all three objectives. A mock election was conducted, and results were announced and posted on the student council Canvas page.
Current event tables, run by Guerra, are also off to a running start. “It’s a safe space for people,” said Guerra. “They can really discuss and dive deeper into something that’s happening in our world.” Guerra noted that going to current events tables can also provide an opportunity to learn about history that is not generally taught in a regular history class. The current events tables are run with no staff administrators, which means it is a very safe place to talk with classmates and freely speak your opinions.
Finally, REV collaborated with the League of Women’s voters to hold a voter pre-registration drive and hand out stickers on election day. Not only did they hold these events, but they registered over 25 students and handed out over 500 stickers. Even though the election season is now over, REV will continue to be the driving force for civic engagement and discourse at Greylock.
