The Mounties golf team had a great regular season and exceeded expectations, a feat made even more impressive by a lack of seniors on the team. This year the team won nine regular season games and lost five. “We were just hoping to break even and make Western Mass.,” said junior Max Easton. “Those two extra wins were definitely a bonus.”
The golf team’s regular season is made up of 14 games, played in the Berkshire County league. The team’s postseason consists of the Western Mass. championship and the state championship. In order to play in these championship games, the team must do well enough in prior games. This year, because of the team’s regular season record, they easily qualified for Western Mass. According to Easton, the team “didn’t do great in that, but if we did, we would have gone to states.”
With the graduation of its seniors and lack of immediate replacements, the team had to rely heavily on some of its younger players. Ninth grader Max Wied said “Will Svrulga really stepped up to fill the shoes of the seniors we lost.” Svrulga was one of the two captains this year, along with Easton. Wied also mentioned Jacob Hillman, another key contributor in ninth grade. In the end, the team’s depth allowed contributions from every player to be useful, regardless of age.
Extra meaning was attached to some of the games due to long standing rivalries. “Lenox and Taconic are definitely our two rivals,” said Easton. This year the team was pretty evenly matched with Lenox. Taconic had a lucky break and was able to win two games against the team.
”I think we did great,” Easton said. The overall team sentiment is that the season was successful and they are hoping to have another great season next year as well, boosted by the fact that no team members will be graduating.
