Benzinger Helps Volleyball Upset Turners Falls
After an 18 game regular season, the Mt. Greylock girls volleyball team’s record stood at 12-6. Senior captains Sam Macwhinnie and Celia Bote led the Mounties to a birth in the Western Massachusetts playoffs. The Mounties ended up drawing the #5 seed, matched up against the #4 seed Turners Falls. On Monday, November 2, the Mounties played their quarterfinal playoff game. Although evenly matched, the Mounties ended up defeating and upsetting Turners Falls in a five set match. The Mounties won the first game 25-23,the third game 25-18, and then finally the fifth and deciding game 16-14. Senior Josie Verter ended the game with an ace, sending the Mounties into a semi-final game versus top-seeded Frontier. Sophomore Jenna Benzinger led the Mounties with 19 kills, while Junior Hope Willis added 12. Senior Celia Bote led the team with 33 digs, and Dagny Albano recorded 33 assists. The Mounties look to knock off Frontier on Wednesday at 6:30 in South Deerfield.
