MG Football: First Impressions
After a disappointing campaign last season, the football team underwent a strong year of improvement. The retirement of Coach Flaherty, head coach of the team from 2003 to 2014, came as a surprise to many, but Coach Agostini stepped up to the spot and hit the ground running. With new additions to the Varsity squad, such as Brandon Condon, Nick Rondeau, and Cal Messina, the Mount Greylock football team seems to be full of potential for the upcoming season. Although the entirety of the team seems to be younger and inexperienced, with only two or three players having significant Varsity experience, they are chock-full of big and fast athletes. When describing the ability of his players, Coach Ago stated that he enjoys the “versatility and enthusiasm” they bring to the team. The return of longtime player, Devin Pelletier, will also be a helpful addition to the team. Coach was also quoted saying that they should be able to “compete in the league” with little struggle. Ago appreciates the attitude of the team, noticing that “they come to practice with a smile on their face” everyday. Despite the huge potential for success Mount Greylock’s football team has in the league and in Western Mass, Coach Ago “ultimately just [wants] the kids to have fun,” an admirable goal.
Mount Greylock’s football team had their first encounter of the season with rivals, Monument Mountain, last Friday. Although they suffered a tough loss, the Greylock team looked promising out on John T. Allen Field. For viewers of this game, the inexperience of the team was evident, but often times, the explosiveness of some of the players was truly something to watch. Rookies Brandon Condon and Cal Messina showed some flashes of brilliance with phenomenal catches from both players, while veterans, Quarterback Brodie Altiere and Tailback Patrick Storie, carried the team to a valiant effort against their opponents. The coaches and players hit the practice field this week to work out the kinks before they go up against Pittsfield this week.
