Five Mount Greylock sports teams have begun a new season after a successful fall and winter. The spring sports include lacrosse, track, tennis, baseball, and softball.
The boys lacrosse team’s first of 16 regular season games is on March 30 against McCann Technical School. The girls have 16 scheduled regular season games starting with a game against South Hadley High School on March 31.
Sophomore captain Finn Noyes spoke about the team’s goals: “We’re hoping to have a winning record this year and hopefully get to Western Mass and States.”
Last year, they fell just short of making these two tournaments. According to Noyes, they had a “pretty young group of kids, but were able to compete with the older guys.”
This year, the squad is expected to be even better and if everything goes according to plan, you should see them at Western Mass and States.
Similarly, the Greylock tennis teams are working hard in preparation for their 16 regular season games, ending with the Western Mass and State Championship tournaments.
Last year, they lost in the first round of Western Mass and the first round of States. This year though, they have high hopes.
“Our team goal is to go top 10 in the state this year,” said sophomore captain Oscar Heeringa. “We’re very determined to win this year. [We want to] make a good foundation for the years to come.”
As for the softball girls, they could be in for a muddy start to the season.
“The first real game is scheduled for Thursday, April 2, at home versus Wahconah, but may be delayed due to weather or field conditions,” said senior captain Audrianna Pelkey.
This year, the team is on the younger side with many seventh graders trying out.
So far, there are 16 games already scheduled but three more with details that need to be worked out. None of these games are going to be easy as the team has a tough schedule this year. Games are close together with a few back-to-back. Pelkey explained that the goal for the season is to “improve little by little and keep a positive attitude going into every game … We are just going to try to have as much fun as possible and encourage one another no matter what.”
The boys baseball team is set to play around 18 to 20 regular season games this year. The first of these is going to be played on March 30 at Easthampton High School.
In the 2025 season, the team had a pretty good run in the State tournament. However, junior Emery Rotter is hoping “to do better than last year…The team is looking good so far and although it’s going to be young, I think we’ll be just fine.”
While most Greylock spring sports teams are chasing a state title, the girls track and field team is trying to defend theirs. Led by Coach Gill, they have won the D6 state title for the past two years. Both the boys and girls teams also currently hold the Western Mass title.
Western Mass and States are set to be held later near the start of June.
Before then, though, the teams “have four league meets, and then a bunch of invitationals,” explained Gill.
The first of these league meets is set to be against Monument Mountain and Taconic on Friday April 10.
Goals for Gill are more process oriented and less focused on the outcome.
“Oftentimes, you set these goals like ‘we want to win everything,’” he explained. “That’s a product that you can’t control. Like, what if someone’s better than you?”
“The captains’ stated goal,” Gill added, “is to work towards winning Western Mass titles.” Gill believes that the team is in a position to do this.
In addition, the Unified track team will be in four league meets, two of which are at home. The home meets are set for April 6 and 29 with the away meets being on March 30 and April 15.
This spring sports season is set to be an exciting one. Make sure to come out and show some Mountie pride in this final school sports season!
