After graduating nine seniors, including the highest goalscorer in state history Michael McCormack ‘15, many skeptics and spectators assumed that this season would be a down year for the Mt. Greylock Boys Lacrosse team. However, despite the significant talk of the Mounties finally being toppled from their undefeated perch at the apex of Berkshire County lacrosse, head coach Brand Asplundh is convinced this is far from the truth and is keen on proving the boys are ready to mount another very successful season.

Led by a dream generation attack line last season, Greylock swept Berkshire County in an undefeated performance and finished runner-up in the Western Mass. DII Tournament. Graduating nine talented players from the defensive, midfield and attack lines, the Mounties this season are a younger squad, with only two seniors on the team. One of these seniors, goaltender and captain Cal Filson, enters his final season for Greylock as the best goalie in Berkshire County, earning a spot on last year’s All-Western Mass. First Team. Junior captains Pat Storie and Kyle Bazonski bring younger leadership to their respective positions on the field, with Storie assuming the X position on attack and Bazonski preparing to lead a new defensive line.

Last season, the Mounties’ fell 12-8 to Grafton High School in the Western Mass. DII Sectional Final, finishing 19-3 overall. Despite entering the game as slight favorites, Greylock played a dull and insipid first period, and despite a resurgence at the beginning of the second half, allowed Grafton to ultimately pull away at the end. A disappointing end for what were high-flying Mounties’, Asplundh has taken the positives from his inaugural season and has discarded the rest for this upcoming campaign. Lacking numbers, Greylock is carried by a strong and talented starting 10 along with well-executed offensive plays and supported by a highly organized and composed close defensive line.

In the opening game of the season, the Mounties’ hosted Hoosac Valley and recorded a convincing 16-2 win, with attackman Pat Storie notching 8 goals. Greylock currently sits at 2-0, beating Agawam 15-2 for their second game of the season. Their next fixture is against Burr and Burton Academy on April 16.
