On Saturday, October 11th, the Mount Greylock Class of 2027 hosted a Spikeball tournament fundraiser at John Takallen Field. A large number of people from all grades participated in the event: some as the players, and others as spectators.
This is the second year the Class of ‘27 has hosted a Spikeball fundraiser, and they plan to continue the tradition next year as well.
“It’s a fast paced, four player net game,” said class president Tim Karampatsos. A game of Spikeball starts with two teams of two players. The four participants start out spaced evenly around a net.
To start the game, one team serves the ball by spiking it onto the net. The opposing team must return the ball in the same way. The game continues until one team is unable to return the ball and it hits the ground. When this happens, the other team gains a point and then play continues.
The fundraiser ran from 6:00pm to 9:30pm. The tournament worked as a bracket system set up by Coach Gill. Nets and balls were provided by the competitors as well as the Mount Greylock Health & Wellness Department.
The first set of games were played to 11 points. During the championship rounds, teams needed 21 points to claim victory.
The Class of ‘27 sold tickets during lunch blocks throughout the week leading up to the tournament. Tickets cost five dollars and were required for each player.
In addition to the entry fees, the class raised money by selling food at a concession stand during the event. The food stand sold pizza, drinks, chips, and cinnamon rolls.
The tournament was popular, with around 22, 2-player teams competing. Seventh grader Bridget Holland said, “I felt more connected to the community after playing because it forced me to meet new people.”
The tournament winners, sophomores Oscar Herringa and Keaton Repetto each took home a $20 gift card to Dunkin’ as a prize for their glorious victory. They raised $350, exceeding the organizer’s goal for the event.
