This year’s fall season has started off great for the Mount Greylock Unified Basketball team. In their most recent game against Monument Mountain, the team scored 60 points, with each athlete contributing 10-12 points, continuing their undefeated season.
However it seems that to Coach and librarian Liza Barrett and the six senior leaders, winning was not the highlight of the game. When asked about her goals for the game and season, Barrett said she wanted the team to “have fun playing together, improve their skills and confidence, and make some new friends.”
From the looks of it, they are succeeding.
Helping Barrett lead the team are this year’s seniors Charlotte Towler, Thomas Warren, Andy Zheng, Liv Zoito, Jacob Shellsey, and Emilie Jones. They have all been on the team for a long time, and now, are able to run stations for practice drills.
“It’s really special because after all the time learning how the team works, I’m able to facilitate activities,” said Zoito. “[Now]…I’m able to be a leader.”
The Unified Basketball team played Wahconah and successfully defended their undefeated streak. They are looking forward to the rest of the season, especially their Red and White Classic on November 13. At the Classic, seniors have the opportunity to shine as coaches in front of an energetic crowd
They have four more games, all of which are at home.
According to Barrett, “the games are magical” and recommends ” if anybody is ever having a bad day or week, go to a Unified game—it will turn everything around for you.”
