Friday, September 26th was a big day for the Mount Greylock golf team. Senior Will Svrluga, sophomores Jacob Hillman and Max Wied, and seventh grader Kai Nafziger all led their team to one of the best team scores in Mount Greylock golf history at Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield. When the four best scorecards were put together, the total score of 156 for Mt. Greylock came just shy of breaking the team record of 151 during the 2008 season.
It was an especially good day for Jacob Hillman, who carded a 33 to lead the team. Hillman was one stroke away from tying the school record, held by Dylan Dethier class of 2009.
After graduating from Mount Greylock, Dethier went on to play golf at Williams College and write “18 in America: A Young Golfer’s Epic Journey to Find the Essence of the Game.”
When asked about coming within one stroke of the school record, Hillman said, “I kind of just showed what I can do in those nine holes so hopefully I can just keep on playing like that at states and hopefully we can do well as a team.”
Hillman was quick to acknowledge the team’s accomplishment as well as the work they have put into the season: “It’s been a lot of fun. We’ve been playing really well. We just took down the best or one of the best teams in the county, Wahconah, which was a lot of fun. We all played solid. We have come together as a team: practicing late, spending time with each other after school, and practicing, so it’s been a lot of fun.”
Since the record breaking afternoon, the Mounties golf team has continued their season of success. On October 14th, Mt. Greylock tied for 4th place at the Division II Western Mass Championships and qualified for states for the third time in 17 years. This year’s state championship was scheduled for October 20th at Foxborough Country Club. The birdies, eagles, pars and fun times had by the team will always be remembered as a part of this historic season.
