A new app has just reached number five on the top twenty free puzzle games chart on the App Store, and it is still rising up the ranks. The game is called “Quetzalcoatl” (ket-sa-ko-tal), named after the feathered serpent god of Aztec mythology who is said to have created humans. The game has a simple design that resembles the popular game “Flow”.

In “Quetzalcoatl,” the player drags serpentine and colorful trains of dots that somewhat resemble the Aztec god around a mismatched checkerboard. The objective is to match the dots with squares of their respective colors. It is challenging because the player tries to position large pieces in specific areas, all within a confined space, and as the player progresses the levels increase in difficulty, eventually making their way to “Ultimate”, which is exponentially more challenging than the easier levels. There is no reward for returning to previously completed levels, which hurts the game’s ability to stand the test of time. However, there are a total of 180 levels that are challenging for the player, so app users will not solve puzzles right away, but not so hard that people will give up and delete the app. There is also only one mode of the game, so perhaps, the creators of the game, 1Button SARL, will publish a new version of “Quetzalcoatl” in the near future.

“Quetzalcoatl” has a refreshing simplicity compared to most apps nowadays because it has no advertisements and is purely free,  meaning has no premium content whatsoever. This app was designed for the sole purpose of giving people a fun experience, and not for making money.
