BasketballOn Thursday night, the Mt. Greylock girls’ basketball team clashed with the Brattleboro Colonels. The Colonels won the game 42-38 after a strong second half. Both teams came out of the gate slowly, but the Mounties settled into a confident rhythm in the second quarter, extending their lead to as much as ten by the half. During the third quarter, the Mounties faltered, and the Colonels took advantage of the Mounties’ loss in consistency, clawing back to a five point deficit  A quick three points from the Colonels started off the fourth quarter, bringing them within two points of the Mounties lead. Senior Captain Lucy Barrett then sunk a deep three pointer to keep the Mounties ahead. The Colonels scored two quick three pointers to take the lead, and the Mounties started rattling off fouls. Despite the loss, several Mounties had stellar games, including junior point guard Ariana Walden who helped to neutralize the Colonels’ three pointers with six points in the form of two three point shots. Sophomore center Jenna Benzinger also had six points, and her height advantage gave the Mounties a rebounding edge over the Colonels. Coach Paul Barrett said, “It’s disappointing because the girls played a great game and put themselves in a good position to win. Brattleboro battled back and came through at the end. We’re still trying to figure out how to win close games.” The Mounties next play Drury on the road on February 4.
