Girls’ XC Wins States

XC Skiing

After a bleak and snowless winter, the Mt. Greylock girls’ nordic ski team emerged victorious with their first state title in three years. The girls went undefeated in their league, however, the team was unsure how things would turn out in the State Championship. “Going into states I knew that we all had to ski hard,” says senior Sophie Gerry. She also noted that physical education coach and parent Brian Gill had been keeping tabs on the Eastern Massachusetts skiers, and he had projected Greylock to win by a small margin. Gerry says, “knowing that we had a chance at winning was a huge confidence boost.”
The girls put four of their eight state’s team members in the top twenty finishers. Senior Grace Smith beat out Chantel Raguin of Acton-Boxboro High School and Gabby Vandendries of Brookline High School for first place. Close behind was Smith’s younger sister, Freshman Margo Smith in seventh, Senior Sophie Gerry in ninth, and eighth grader Brandi Gill in seventeenth. Senior Greta Savitsky comments that the team asked their coach, “to train them like they were going to win states, even though it wasn’t especially likely.” Savitsky notes that the win was a great way to finish a great year and a fantastic end to a hard season.
