In its first year after the retirement of legendary coach Raymond Miro, the Mounties’ wrestling team boasted several talented wrestlers who found individual success in their respective weight classes. On new head coach Sean Rorke, junior Owen Brandriss said “[Coach Rorke] really stepped up this year. He really adapted to the new situation, and brought the intensity to practice that we needed.” Despite this, the generally young squad often struggled to fill all of the weight classes in county meets, leading to a slight drop in the team success that the Mounties previously had. Leading the charge for the Mounties was senior captain Devin Pelletier, who took home the Western Mass. crown at 170 pounds. During the season, Pelletier also broke the state record for career wrestling victories, finishing his career with 244 career wins. Junior Jude Rorke and senior Robert Sutter have also been integral pieces of the Mounties’ squad, with Rorke taking third place at 152 pounds at the Western Mass. meet, and Sutter snagging fourth at 126. The Mounties remain hopeful for the future. “We’re a bucket of untapped potential,” said Jude Rorke, “right now the older wrestlers are like lions leading the pride, and our young wrestlers like Liam Bradley, Ty Lepecier, Darren Pelletier, and Jack Catelotti, are the young cubs learning to hunt down their own antelopes.” Several top wrestlers finished their seasons on high notes. With solid performances at the Division III state meet in Wakefield, Massachusetts on the weekend of February 18-19, Pelletier and Rorke moved on to the All-State meet. Pelletier’s fifth place finish at All-States was enough to advance to New England’s, which took place over the weekend of March 4-5, where he went 2-2 to complete an extremely successful and record-breaking career.
