Volleyball Adjusts to New Roster

With fall sports beginning, the Mount Greylock Volleyball Team has been laying a foundation for a new season. The team had a successful season last year, but after losing eight seniors, the team is still adjusting to the new roster.

Last year, “the team was very good because we had some very skilled seniors that left us this year,” senior captain Gabriella Alvarez said. Greg Geyer is coaching the varsity team, and 7th grade Social Studies teacher Ellen Kaiser is coaching the JV team, replacing Tanya Hernandez. Their starting roster includes captains and seniors Lucy Shepard and Alvarez, as well as junior Alyssa Phelps, junior Emma Hayward, sophomore Emma Sandstrom and sophomore Takiera Darrow.

So far, the team has participated in four games. They first travelled to Monument Mountain in Great Barrington, MA, and won the game in the first three sets. Since then, they have played away games against Amherst and Mount Everett. The team lost to Amherst but beat Mount Everett. On September 12, the team hosted their first home game, in the Mountie Dome, against Wahconah. They attracting a large, enthusiastic crowd, but ultimately lost the game.

“We want to get in the tournament and win Western Mass this year,” Alvarez said. “We haven’t won because Frontier always beats us so we need to work on beating them this year.”

Alvarez said that, with upcoming games against teams such as Lenox, Taconic, and Lee, the Mounties are not only hoping to win, but also to “be loud, positive, and work hard!”
