Robert Thistle, renowned Mt. Greylock math teacher, tells us that, “at times it can be a balancing act, and you have to stay organized. But I have a very supportive family, and I really love all of the things I do. At the end of the day teaching doesn’t feel like work, and I think that’s what enables me to be so passionate about what I do.” The Kapteyn Prize is awarded to those who have successfully shown excellence within their teaching abilities and dedicated involvement within a school community. When asked about the prize he is set to receive, Thistle stated, “I’m very humbled and honored to have been chosen. I feel very fortunate to be getting the prize, and also even to be put in the same category as someone as great as James Kapteyn himself.” Thistle has taught several courses in his time at Mt. Greylock, but one in particular stands out. “I really enjoy teaching AP Calculus, but I can’t say for certain that I have a favorite. I love to watch all of my students grow individually and develop more confidence over time. All of the classes have been great, and it’s a very rewarding process to be involved in,” reports Thistle.  The prize was presented to him on October 26 during an open ceremony  held after a celebratory brunch. Along with the great honor of receiving the award, Thistle will also receive $10,000 to use as he wishes, although the Kapteyn prize organization requests that the money not be used on school based purchases. Even though he has graciously received the honor, Thistle noted that there is always room for improvement, saying “I look forward to teaching for many more years to come and I plan to keep giving the same attention and energy that I always have to my career.”
