On Thursday, December 3, students arrived in the cafeteria to see a large table with a poster that read “Sign Up to Vote.” StudentsVoting at Mt. Greylock can vote in elections at both state and federal levels if they turn eighteen by election time. The most popular is the presidential election for many students. Registering to vote is the first step to voter eligibility. Williams Senior Annabel Coleman ran the voter registration and decided to help raise awareness in young people about voting as a project for her civics class at Williams run by Justin Crowe. According to the pamphlet handed out by Coleman, only 19.9% of voters between 18 and 29 voted in the 2014 national election. She helped many people begin the registration process including George Hedreen (‘16) and Whit Ellingwood(‘17), both of whom turn eighteen before the election for the next President. Hedreen and Ellingwood expressed concern about the lack of young people registering and voting for the upcoming election. Hedreen thinks the matter is simple; “Just Vote” he said. Ellingwood added that “this is our first chance to start changing the world that has been handed to us.”
