On Thursday, February 11th, both the boys’ and girls’ Mt. Greylock Nordic Ski teams won their respective state championships in Weston, MA. First for the Greylock boys was senior captain Ian Culnane, who placed 3rd overall. Right behind Culnane was senior captain Matt Wiseman, finishing 4th overall, who said that “it is an amazing feeling to end [his] time on the ski team with a state championship.” Greylock’s third skier was Evan Arthur, a junior, who finished 14th in the state. As the 20th fastest skier in the race, was Greylock’s fourth man, sophomore Ric Donati.

In the girls race, senior captain Grace Smith finished first overall, making her the fastest high school girl skier in the state of Massachusetts. Freshman Margo Smith, Greylock’s second Grace’s sister tied for 7th place with Rebecca Feist from Concord-Carlisle. 9th overall, senior captain Sophie Gerry finished as Greylock’s third girl. Finally, eighth grader Brandi Gil finished fourth for Greylock and 17th overall. Senior captain Greta Savitsky said, “Our original goal was to win states. As a senior I feel so much happiness, and as a captain I feel so much pride for my team.” The girls’ team beat state runner-up Concord Carlisle by 14 points and the boys beat Amherst by 13. Over fifty Mt. Greylock students attended the race to cheer on their teammates. Coach Hilary Greene said “Our racers were just incredible, and our cheer squad helped push them along. It was truly a wonderful day and history in the making for MG Nordic.”
